Nokia Launches the Digital Cellular Data Card in Japan
August 01, 1996

Nokia Mobile Phones (Japan) K.K. has today introduced the Nokia Digital Data/Fax Card to the Japanese digital cellular networks as the first foreign manufacturer.

The Nokia Digital Data/Fax Card enables wireless data transmission linking Nokia's digital mobile phones and portable computers with the PCMCIA slot. The credit card sized, compact and highly useful devise enables the sending and receiving of e-mail, faxes and data files. It also offers access to public information services, such as the Internet.

The newly introduced Nokia Digital Data/Fax Card, which compiles with Japanese digital standards (PDC), consumes less power than other data cards (200mW, 15mW during stand by operation), and the retail price is Yen 29,800 including software and delivery cost. This includes 'EasyFax Lite' for Nokia, an application developed for this product by A.I. Soft, which supports Class 2 ECM.

Sales of this product will be directly handled by Nokia Mobile Phones (Japan) K.K. through telephone orders and through the Internet. The card is sold under the Nokia brand name.

Mr. Olav Stang, President of Nokia Mobile Phones (Japan) K.K. said, "Nokia believes that there is a fast growing market in Japan for mobile data services and that the Nokia Digital Data/Fax Card provides many value-added services, particularly for busy executives who spend considerable time outside office."

As a world leader in products and technologies for the cellular data market, Nokia Mobile Phones has developed solutions for mobile data transfer since 1986. The Nokia Cellular Data Card was the first data card launched for digital GSM/PCN networks in 1994. In 1995, Nokia also launched the first wireless data card for PCS-1900 networks in North America. Among Nokia's latest achievements is the revolutionary all-in-one Nokia 9000 Communicator, the first fully featured GSM phone that combines voice and data services and personal organiser functions in a single and easy-to-use unit.

Nokia Mobile Phones (Japan) K.K. was established in 1993 as a joint venture between Nokia and Mitsui & Co. It was the first foreign manufacturer to sell digital phones for Japanese standards. The company started marketing cellular phones in April 1994 through Digital Phone Group, then through NTT Docomo from May 1995 and through IDO Group from November 1995. Nokia Mobile Phones (Japan) K.K. has just introduced a new generation mobile phone in June 1996.
