Telefónica Selects Nokia for Major GSM Expansion

Telefónica Móviles (Telefónica), the leading GSM Operator in Spain and Nokia Telecommunications have signed a contract for the supply of a major expansion to Telefónica's GSM network. The Frame Agreement signed will cover the supplies for the period of 1996-97 and the equipment deliveries will start immediately.
Deliveries will include Nokia's base stations and base stations controllers, operations and maintenance center, as well as implementation and technical support services.
"Telefónica Móviles" Movistar GSM service has now been in operation for 1 year. During that time we have implemented a quality network with subscriber numbers now exceeding 400,000. To further develop our network across Spain we are happy to be working with Nokia who have shown their GSM products to be world class ", says Mr. Luis Lada, the president of Telefónica Móviles.
Telefónica Móviles is a fully independent subsidiary of Telefónica de España, S.A. operating mobile telephony, paging and public trunking services in Spain. It is one of the fastest growing cellular operators in Europe with a turnover in the first half of 1996 was some USD 0.9 billion and it has 1,500 employees.
