Nokia to Expand Zhejiang GSM Network in China

Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecommunications Ltd. and Zhejiang Post and Telecommunications Administration have signed an agreement for the expansion of the GSM digital cellular network in Zhejiang province of the People’s Republic of China. The value of the deliveries is over USD 25 million.


Nokia announced the agreement for the first phase of the Zhejiang GSM network in August, 1995. The network currently covers two regions and one major city; the Wenzhou and Taizhou regions as well as one of the China’s busiest harbours, the city of Ningbo. The expansion will increase the capacity of the Nokia-supplied Zhejiang network to approximately 280,000 subscribers

Nokia will supply to the Zhejiang PTA its DX 200 switching technology, base station controllers, network management system expansions, as well GSM base stations which will be manufactured and delivered locally by Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecommunications Ltd. The agreement also included Nokia’s proprietary solution to enhance network capacity, Intelligent Underlay Overlay (IUO) solution. IUO will be implemented initially in Wenzhou region. Additionally, Nokia will provide services including commissioning, integration and training.

Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecommunications Ltd. is a 50 - 50 joint venture between Beijing Telecommunications Equipment factory of MPT and Nokia.
