July 04, 1996
Japanese cellular boom continues in 1996
Nokia forecasts strong growth for the Japanese digital cellular market in 1996. During the first six months of the year there have been over 0,5 million new subscribers per month and the trend will continue towards the end of the year. The focus of the cellular market in Japan has fast shifted from analog to digital. This is seen as an opportunity for Nokia, since the company is manufacturing phones for the digital PDC network. The PDC network has currently almost 7 million subscribers out of the total of 11,8 million subscribers in the Japanese analog and digital networks.
Nokia Mobile Phones has started sales of the newly introduced second generation of digital cellular phones for the Japanese market. The phones feature increased standby- and talktimes, stylish design as well as the friendly Nokia user interface, which enables efficient use of the different menu functions. With the new phones Nokia is also launching changeable colored covers as the first manufacturer in the Japanese market. These are expected to attract new fashion-conscious consumers from the fast growing private user group.
Nokia has operated in the Japanese cellular phone market since May 1994 and has been the most successful foreign manufacturer in a market of tough competition. To enhance its competitiveness in the Japanese market, Nokia opened an R&D center in November 1995 hereby increasingly focusing on the rapid development of technology in the Japanese market.
