Nokia Supplies GSM and NMT Network Expansions to AIS in Thailand

Advance Info Service (AIS) of Thailand and Nokia Telecommunications have signed contracts for the expansions of AIS’s GSM and NMT cellular networks. The expansions is to increase the coverage and the capacity of the networks for northern, central and southern regions of Thailand. The value of the contracts is approximately USD 25 million.
Nokia will deliver to Thailand its GSM base station system and NMT 900 base stations, network management system as well as implementation, training and maintenance services.
AIS has approximately 800,000 subscribers in its GSM and NMT networks. Both networks have nationwide coverage in Thailand.
Nokia has supplied cellular infrastructure to AIS since 1990. In April, 1990, Nokia announced a contract with AIS for the supply of the first NMT 900 network, called "Cellular 900", to Thailand. Nokia has supplied several expansions to the NMT network during the last five years. Nokia has also supplied base station subsystem to AIS’s GSM network since in 1994 and expanded the network’s coverage in 1995.
Advanced Info Services Plc is a subsidiary of the Shinawatra Computer and Communications Group. AIS was granted the concession for the NMT 900 network in 1990. Shinawatra Computer and Communications Group consists of more than 20 companies doing business in telecommunications services, telecommunications and computer sales and broadcasting & media.
