Nokia Introduces Chinese User Interface for the Nokia 8100 Series
June 04, 1996
Nokia Mobile Phones has announced today that it has developed a Chinese user interface for its new revolutionary digital product, the Nokia 8110 handportable. Nokia is the first cellular manufacturer to have both traditional and simplified character user interface sets all in one phone.
The traditional character set interface is designed to be used in cellular markets like Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia. The simplified character set version is mainly targeted for the markets in Singapore and People’s Republic of China.
The new user interface was developed by team of native Chinese speaking Nokia personnel. During the development phases the characters were specifically designed to provide the best possible clarity, legibility and calligraphic shape.
Jouko Hayrynen, Senior Vice President, Asia-Pacific, said, “The cellular market in Asia will be the largest in the world by the year 1998 and Chinese speaking countries will account for a large proportion of the volume. China is already among the top 5 cellular markets of the world, and Taiwan is expected to reach the top 10. Nokia Mobile Phones has pioneered ease to use phones. The launch of the Chinese character set in our new Nokia 8110 handportable will now provide this benefit to the Chinese speaking population.”
Nokia Mobile Phones introduced a new sophisticated phone for GSM and PCN standards in March. The Nokia 8100 series is a family of high-end phones with features that will meet all the needs of the very demanding Asian consumer. It is a top quality product that has a unique curved design that ensures the perfect fit for all ear to mouth ratios. It has long talk and standby times, is light weight and supports GSM II phase features as well as a comprehensive range of accessories.
The Nokia 8110 weighs only 151 grams with the standard Lithium-Ion battery. However, the operating times are excellent: talk time is up to 5 hours and standby time up to 150 hours (6 days) with the extended battery. Charging times are the shortest on the market.
The Nokia 8100 series provides a comprehensive range of features, including the acclaimed user-friendly interface and logical keypad layout. This is the first Nokia phone with an illuminated dot matrix full graphics display with Chinese characters. It changes the text size automatically for easy viewing. Menu texts come in 1x 4 characters (main menu) or 2 x 5 characters (sub-menus). The memory can store up to 324 names and numbers (125 in the phone, up to 199 in SIM card memory).
The Nokia 8100 series of mobile phones enable easy communication on the move, supporting the improved short message service and sending and receiving of faxes, file and mail with the Nokia Cellular Data Card. With the versatile set of accessories, the phone naturally adapts to different environments.
The Nokia 8100 phones with the Chinese interface will be commercially available at the fourth quarter of this year.
