Nokia Supplies NMT Network Equipment to Indonesia
May 15, 1996

Nokia Telecommunications has signed an agreement with Mobisel of Indonesia for the expansion of PT. Mobile Selular Indonesia (Mobisel) NMT 470 cellular network. The first shipments will start in July 1996 and the commencement of the network trial is expected by the end of 1996. The value of the agreement is close USD 30 million.

Under this contract, Nokia will deliver, install and commission the turnkey NMT 470 network, including Nokia’s network controllers, radio base stations, operation and maintenance centre and complete microwave transmission network. The contract also includes technical support services provided by Nokia for software and hardware for a five year period after the network is launched.

This will be a major component of the first stage of a nationwide network implementation for Mobisel. This first stage comprises Southern Sumatera, Java, Bali and Lombok.

“NMT technology is highly suitable for Indonesia, because of the country’s size and NMT’s ability to cover wide areas cost-efficiently”, said Mr. Risto Poskiparta, President Director of P.T. Nokia Telecommunications.

Mobisel of Indonesia is a new joint venture between PT Rajasa Hazanah Perkasa and the state-owned PT Telekom. After this expansion, the network will have a capacity of up to 85,000 subscribers.
