Nokia Research Center to Head New EU Multimedia Project
May 13, 1996

The European Union Commission has accepted Nokia Research Center to head the multi-national IMMP research and development project within the Fourth R&D Framework Programme of the EU. The objective of the IMMP project (Integrated MultiMedia Project) is to develop common standard technologies for multimedia services to be used both in business and residential environments over ATM networks.

The essential part of the IMMP project will be end-user trials, which will be run in Lappeenranta, Finland and in Manchester, UK. The trials starting on a large scale next year will particularly focus on video conferencing, tele-education, tele-working and interactive advertising, which is expected to fascinate network users more than editorial contents on future network publications.

In all, there are ten parties from Finland, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Germany involved in the project. In addition to Nokia, Nynex CableComms UK, Telia Sweden, Telecom Finland, German National Research Center GMD, VTT Technical Research Center of Finland, Sybase UK, UI Design Sweden, University of Salford and Helsinki University of Technology are also taking part.

The IMMP project will require the effort of some 70 person-years, and the EU is funding a part of the expenses. The project will last from 1996 to 1998.
