Nokia Signs Licensing Pact With Reflection Technology That Brings Virtual Display Technology To Mobile Phones
May 09, 1996

Selected Models of Nokia Phones Now Compatible With Technology That Puts A Full-Size Computer Screen In The Palm Of User’s Hand

Nokia Mobile Phones, Europe’s largest manufacturer of cellular phones, announced it has signed a licensing agreement with Reflection Technology Inc. that will allow Reflection’s FaxView™ personal fax reader to operate with selected models of Nokia phones.

Specifically, Nokia Mobile Phones has licensed its analog bus protocol to Reflection Technology, which allows FaxView to connect to Nokia data-compatible phones. Nokia customers will be able to use FaxView in the analog function of their model 121, 232, and 2120 cellular phones.

"Reflection Technology offers a unique capability of receiving and viewing faxes and e-mail over cellular networks," said Andrew Harsch, marketing manager for Nokia Mobile Phones’ Wireless Data Group. “By Nokia providing its technology, a substantial number of mobile users will now be able to take advantage of FaxView as a business tool.”

Weighing less than 8 ounces, the FaxView personal fax reader is a palm-size device that connects with cellular or landline phones to allow the mobile user to receive, read, store and send faxes anywhere, anytime -- and without the use of a laptop computer.

The built-in patented virtual display allows users to view a full 12-inch page of graphics and text crisply and clearly as soon as the fax is received. FaxView features a virtual keyboard to create memos and respond to faxes, and a full-screen menu that allows users to choose functions, such as view, send, enlarge and reduce. FaxView can store approximately 25 pages and has a built-in directory that stores more than 100 names and fax numbers for use with the unit’s auto-dial feature.

"Reflection Technology is pleased to offer compatibility of FaxView with Nokia phones, and proud to support a world leader in cellular technology," said Richard D. Lane, vice president, sales and marketing, Reflection Technology. "By receiving the technology license from Nokia, we are able to meet pent-up demand for FaxView by a tremendous number of cellular users who have Nokia phones."

Founded in 1987, Reflection Technology is a worldwide leader in virtual display technology and wireless messaging. Reflection’s unique Scanned Linear Array (SLA™) display technology is prominently featured in its FaxView personal fax reader and in Nintendo’s portable 3-D game system, Virtual Boy™. In addition to developing FaxView, Reflection designs, manufactures and licenses its SLA display technology for use in a variety of wireless communication and interactive entertainment products. Reflection Technology is based in Waltham, Mass.
