Nokia and Telecom Finland Sign FIM 700 Million DCS and GSM Agreement
April 23, 1996

Nokia Telecommunications and Telecom Finland have signed a frame agreement. The total value of the agreement is more than FIM 700 million, making it the largest mobile cellular network contract ever concluded in Finland. The deliveries will be scheduled for the end of 1996 and for 1997 - 1998.

Nokia will supply Telecom Finland a complete DCS mobile cellular network system and expansions to the existing GSM network. This agreement strengthens Nokia’s position as a leading supplier of DCS networks in the world. With these new investments Telecom Finland maintains its internationally recognized position as a leading supplier of telecommunications services.

According to CEO of Telecom Finland Ltd., Mr. Aulis Salin, one of Telecom Finland’s strengths in developing mobile phone services lies in its successful cooperation with leading component manufacturers. The agreement just concluded with Nokia is a continuation of last year’s agreements. "The new DCS network will be called GSM 1800 and will ensure that we have adequate GSM capacity in the Finland’s metropolitan areas for existing and future mobile phone customers, while improving mobile network quality at the same time. New services can also be further developed as the network capacity grows" says Mr. Salin

"This agreement further tightens the good cooperation Telecom Finland and Nokia have experienced for a long time, both in cellular phone networks and in fixed networks" says Mr. Juhani Koivula, Nokia Telecommunications Area Manager, Finland. "The open competition and the progressiveness of the operators have helped Nokia develop the competitiveness of its products and systems, and thus further our success on global markets. This is why a strong position in Finland has a vital importance also in the future for Nokia".

DCS 1800 is a digital cellular network standard based on the GSM network architecture. Whereas GSM works in the 900 MHz frequency band, DCS 1800 works in the 1800 MHz band. At this higher frequency range more radio channels are available, which enables higher subscriber density and traffic capacity.
