Nokia Builds on "Media-Ready" Monitor Series with New 21" Line
April 22, 1996

Nokia Display Products, Inc., a leading manufacturer of display and audio technologies, has announced the introduction of a new series of high-resolution 21” (19.7” viewable area) multimedia/video-conferencing-ready monitors. Designed for imaging, multimedia and video-conferencing applications, the monitors pioneer a new industry standard for 21” desktop monitors with built-in high-quality audio capabilities with sub-woofer and an integrated color CCD video camera.

In April, Nokia began shipping “media-ready” monitors — the 17” 447Xav and 447K — the first monitors ever to include built-in stereo speakers with a sub-woofer and a color video camera. The success of this integrated technology led Nokia to introduce the new 21” line of monitors. The series of 21” media-ready models consists of two models:

    Multigraph 445Xav:

  • Built-in sub-woofer
  • Powered, stereo speakers
  • On-screen control menus
  • Directional microphone
  • TCO‘95 emissions compliance

    Multigraph 445Xavc:

  • Same as the above with the addition of a built-in color CCD video camera

Also available as a display-only monitor — the Multigraph 445Xi — the series is the next generation of Nokia’s award-winning 21” MultigraphÔ 445X, winner of Imaging Magazine’s “Product of the Year.” The Nokia Multigraph 445Xi, 445Xav and 445Xavc monitors will be available at the beginning of the third quarter from Nokia dealers and distributors. Suggested retail prices for the 445Xi, 445Xav and 445Xavc are US $1,899 and US $1,949 and US $2,449 respectively.

Employing technology from Nokia’s European audio division — a provider of high quality sound systems for European luxury cars — the 445Xav and 445Xavc deliver a new level of sound quality to the desktop with built-in, full-range stereo speakers providing for high quality audio and visual desktop capabilities with low footprint. An industry first for 21” monitors, the built-in sub-woofer delivers frequency response previously unavailable from a desktop monitor.

The Multigraph 445Xi, 445Xav and 445Xavc exceed the new VESA standard of 1280 x 1024 resolution at 85 Hz, achieve a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200 at a flicker-free 85 Hz refresh and deliver a maximum refresh rate of 160 Hz. The monitors features a high-resolution full square CRT with Invar shadow mask, a .22 mm horizontal/.16 mm vertical dot pitch, and a horizontal frequency range of 30-107 kHz. They also comply with the new stricter TCO ‘95 standard and exceeds EnergyStar, MPR-II and ISO 9241-3 specifications.

Available on the 445Xavc, an on-board color video camera allows for convenient multimedia and video-conferencing capabilities without the need for external components, placement and wiring. The auto-focus camera is located immediately beneath the monitor's display area providing for optimum viewing angle. Users may adjust camera aim up to 5 degrees in any direction for pinpoint image capture. Additional gross adjustment may also be made via swivel and tilt of the entire unit on its base. The camera assembly also features a mechanical front cover for optical lens protection.

“High-end imaging and business applications are experiencing tremendous growth, and are demanding large-screen monitors that provide users a sharp picture and exceptional resolution. Meanwhile, users are also investing in high quality audio peripherals for true stereo sound and video add-ons for video-conferencing,” said Mahyar “Mac” Motraghi, Nokia Display Products’ president of marketing and sales. “At Nokia, we have been closely examining the convergence of media on the desktop. The 21” media-ready series is a response to this phenomenon, and it sets a new industry standard which the market has come to expect from Nokia.”

Like all Nokia monitors, the Multigraph 445Xi, 445Xav and 445Xavc feature proprietary FullScreenTM technology to expand usable monitor viewing area by ten percent while reducing eye strain and making imaging, business, graphics and CAD applications easier to work with. Full compliance with the new stringent TCO ‘95 emissions control standards and Energy StarSM power consumption further contribute to ergonomic features and user comfort.

Windows 95TM Plug & Play compatible, the 445Xi, 445Xav and 445Xavc feature Nokia’s own intuitive DigiControlÔ on-screen control menu for a variety of on-the-fly adjustments to brightness, contrast, color temperature, white uniformity, focus, pincushion, picture height/width, picture position, tilt, trapezoid, orthganality, horizontal/vertical convergence, RGB-control, synchronization, degaussing, PowerSaver on/off, and menu language selection. Macintosh platform-specific adjustment menus are also standard.
