Nokia Signs Manufacturing Agreement with IRDETO
April 18, 1996
Nokia Multimedia Network Terminals (MNT) has today signed a strategic agreement with IRDETO, part of the NETHOLD Group in the Netherlands, for the production of the Nokia Mediamaster 9500S. The agreement gives Nokia a licence to manufacture and market digital set-top boxes according to the digital DVB/MPEG 2 standard using IRDETO's conditional access system.
The target markets for the Mediamaster include the Benelux countries, Scandinavia and South Africa, where the MultiChoice Programme 'bouquets' will be available, as well as Thailand and Australia, where the programme providers Shina Wattra and Galaxy will operate.
Owe Tornquist, vice-president of Nokia Multimedia Network Terminals, says, "Following last year's major contract between Nokia and the German Kirch Group to deliver 1,000,000 'd-box' models, this deal strengthens our position in the digital set-top market. Our commitment to the multimedia business couldn't be clearer: we have invested £25m in production facilities and recruited 300 extra staff in Sweden."
"As well as the new country-markets now open to us, the Mediamaster will be available in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Italy from this spring. The multimedia age is definitely here," he concludes.
The Nokia Mediamaster 9500 S has been received extremely well and has already won its first international award: Finalist for the Most Innovative Cable/Satellite/Telecommunications Product 1996 at the Cable & Satellite Show 1996 at Earls Court.
