Nokia's Joint Venture for Mobile Communications Inaugurated Manufacturing of Mobile Phones and Base Stations Starts in China

Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecommunications Ltd. is a joint venture between Nokia and Beijing Telecommunications Equipment Factory 506. The joint venture was officially inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Finland Mr. Martti Ahtisaari, Minister Wu Jichuan, Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications and Minister Xu, Ministry of Forestry, People's Republic of China.
The joint venture has already started the production of digital and analog mobile phones for both GSM and E-TACS systems and is now ready to produce also base stations for the GSM digital cellular networks. Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecommunications has already secured several contracts, GSM systems deliveries e.g. Zhejiang and Yunnan provinces, and the mobile phones are sold nation-wide.
"The joint venture is one of our most important milestones during our presence in China until now. We are confident that through hard work and continuous development of Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecommunications we will be able to greatly contribute to the Chinese mobile telecommunications industry", said Mr. Jorma Ollila, Nokia President and CEO.
Beijing Telecommunications Equipment Factory 506 of Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications is under the supervision of Post and Telecommunications industry Corporation. It is engaged in designing, manufacturing and distributing the analog and digital microwave telecommunications equipment.
"The establishment and development of Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecommunications attributes to the friendship and the co-operation in technology and economy between China and Finland. We have given and will continue to give full support for its development, and make it an important mobile telecommunications base in the development of Chinese telecommunications industry", said Mr. Zhang Yan Ai, Vice President, China National Posts and Telecommunications Industry Corporation.
