Nokia Supplies DCS Network Expansion to TAC of Thailand
April 09, 1996
Total Access Communications Public Company Limited (TAC) and Nokia have signed frame agreement for the delivery of DCS1800 mobile network equipment for TACīs network expansion. The value of the contract is approximately USD 50 million over the next 12 months.
Nokia delivers to Thailand its DX 200 switching centres, expansion to the existing switches, base stations, base station controllers, Operation and Maintenance Centre, Network Planning Systems, as well as implementation operation and maintenance services.
This contract further strengthens Nokiaīs position as one of the main suppliers to the TACīs DCS1800 network. The expansion will enable TAC to ensure sufficient network capacity for the increasing customer base in Bangkok and expand the geographical coverage of the network outside the Bangkok metropolitan area. These equipment deliveries enable TAC to ensure good indoor coverage and capacity inside office buildings, shopping malls, underground car parks etc.
TAC, a member in the UCOM group, is a leading provider of wireless communications services in Thailand with the revenue close to USD 300 million in 1995. TACīs cellular operations consist of analogue AMPS network and digital DCS1800 network. Total number of subscribers currently exceeds 500,000 and is increasing rapidly.
DCS1800 is a digital cellular network standard based on the GSM network architecture. Whereas GSM works in the 900 Mhz frequency band, DCS1800 works in the 1800 Mhz band. At this higher frequency range more radio channels are available, which enables higher subscriber density and traffic capacity.
