Nokia Introduced the PCS1900 Mobile Switching Center for the US Market
March 26, 1996

Nokia Telecommunications announced yesterday during the CTIA exhibition in Dallas the introduction of the PCS1900 Mobile Switching Center (MSC) today at CTIA. The addition of the MSC to Nokia's current infrastructure products makes Nokia a PCS1900 turn-key system solution for the North American market.

The MSC is the heart of the PCS1900 network. Its capabilities define the services Operators can offer to mobile phone users to differentiate themselves. These standard services include call forwarding, call barring, data services, and short messages services. Other features that the Nokia PCS1900 MSC has the ability to perform is call waiting, call hold, closed user group and multiparty service.

The Intelligent Network (IN) concept is part of Nokia's PCS1900 total system solution. The use of Intelligent Network capabilities in the Nokia MSC will enable operators to develop a new generation of creative and innovative service packages. Such packages could include family service, freephone, premium rate, personal number and virtual private networks, as well as many other enhanced services.

The strategic decision to produce the MSC for this market is a result of timing and customer feedback.

"We listened to our customers and, given the timescales that the Operators want to launch their systems, we felt we would be well positioned to successfully introduce the MSC to this market and to meet their business objectives", said Jyrki Salo, President of Nokia Telecommunications Inc. The Mobile Switching Center is scheduled to provide commerical service in early 1997.

Nokia recently announced a contract with American Portable Telecom, Inc. (APT) to provide the total Nokia PCS1900 infrastructure solution, including Mobile Switching Centers, for 6 MTAs in a contract valued at $200 million. APT's license areas are Columbus, Houston, Kansas City, Minneapolis-St. Paul , Pittsburgh, and Tampa-St. Petersburg-Orlando areas.
