Nokia Is First to Deliver New Dual Mode AMPS/TDMA Portable Cellular Telephone for IS-136 TDMA Markets

Nokia 2160 redefines the art of conversation by offering the most powerful digital cellular features without sacrificing beauty and style
Nokia Mobile Phones, Europe’s largest manufacturer of cellular phones, today introduced the Nokia 2160, the first available dual mode AMPS/TDMA phone designed to work on the new IS-136 TDMA digital cellular network.
The new phone, which is available in a fashionable array of artistic designs, features all of the award winning Nokia features. These include Nokia’s pioneering, big-screen 30-character super-twist LCD display with permanent signal and battery strength indicators, separate voice mail and text-message-waiting indicators, and nine “one-touch” dialing keys for instant access to emergency services, voice mail and frequently called numbers. All of the features offered are easily accessible via Nokia’s user-friendly menu with help text and soft-key interface.
In addition, the 2160 is analog data ready via an optional cable that enables the user to connect the phone to a compatible PCMCIA modem card for sending and receiving faxes, data and e-mail anywhere within a cellular network. Finally, a full complement of accessories ranging from rapid AC and DC chargers to installed hands-free car kits with 3-watt boosters are also available.
The 2160 has been designed to support all of the most advanced IS-136 TDMA digital features available today. These include authentication, call forwarding, calling line identification, call waiting, selective call acceptance, short message service and voice privacy.
At 8.3 ounces, (with optional 550 mAh nickel-metal-hydride battery), the 2160 provides talk times of 45 minutes (analog)/70 minutes (digital) and standby times of 14-19 hours (analog)/ 26-30 hours (digital). These performance times are also available with an optional 550 mAh nickel-metal-hydride vibrating battery that provides silent call notification. In its standard 9.8 ounce configuration (1100 mAh nickel-cadmium battery), the 2160 provides talk times of 90 minutes (analog)/150 minutes (digital) and standby times of 28-38 hours (analog)/52-60 hours (digital). Lastly, an optional 1500 mAh nickel-metal-hydride battery provides talk times of 2 hours (analog)/3.5 hours (digital) and standby times of 40-53 hours (analog) and 71-83 hours (digital).
