Nokia to deliver new public trunked mobile radio network in Philippines
March 19, 1996
Universal Telecommunications Service, Inc. (UTS) recently awarded Nokia the contract to deliver a public access mobile radio (PAMR) network in the Visayas Island and Mindanao in the Philippines. The contract is worth over USD 3 million.
UTS chose Nokia’s ACTIONET PAMR system because it is the market leader with over 300 systems installed in 25 countries around the world. UTS’s system network will utilize one central exchange in Cebu City linked to several regional exchanges. Nokia will also provide the transmission equipment using its DMR 2000 digital microwave radios to link key sites including the cities of Cebu, Iloilo, Davao, Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga. The system will be launched in mid 1996.
UTS’s service, dubbed MOBILCOM, will use the global mobile radio standard MPT 1327 to provide fast, affordable voice and data connections in the region. The MPT 1327 is an open standard that is reliable, adaptable and provides a stable platform for unique value-added services for fleet, group and person-to-person voice, data and status communications. The MOBILCOM network will also have connections to the public switched telephone network in each city so subscribers will be able call any phone or radio terminal in the system.
UTS is an affiliate of the Marsman-Drysdale Group in partnership with the U.S.-based International Wireless Communications, Inc. (IWC), a pioneer in wireless telecommunications, Filinvest Development Corporation, noted for its vision and development acumen; and the Viado family, the original franchise holder
