Range of superior GSM products unveiled: Nokia's innovations offer a new dimension to mobile communication
March 13, 1996

New products enhance usability of mobile communication services and are targeted at a number of emerging user segments

Nokia has today unveiled a number of new GSM products at the CeBIT exhibition in Hannover, Germany. With the new phones and other devices for mobile communication, Nokia will hit several emerging segments and sees a potential for a further reinforcement of its market position, especially in GSM areas.

With the introduction of a new innovation called the Nokia 9000 Communicator, Nokia reinforces its dominance in GSM and wireless data products. The Nokia 9000 Communicator is a revolutionary portable smart phone that incorporates the functions of a GSM phone, a palmtop computer and an organiser, all-in-one.

Additionally, Nokia’s new handportable, the Nokia 8110 is a top of the range GSM phone with an attractive and ergonomic design, supersmall size and enhanced features.

According to Pekka Ala-Pietilä, President of Nokia Mobile Phones, the fast expansion, stability and wide services of the GSM technology have created a solid platform for new product concepts.

"GSM has made its breakthrough in wireless voice communication, but the networks are ready for much more. Data services have so far remained largely embedded, but will quickly offer a new dimension in personal communication. A number of factors give reason to anticipated fast growth in share of data communication in GSM networks. Among them are the wide acceptance of GSM standard, increase of the digital processing power, and development of new user-friendly software. The Nokia 9000 combines all this and is actually the missing link in the information revolution," says Ala-Pietilä.

Nokia has also recently complemented its GSM product range with three other products:

  • The Nokia 1610, a consumer phone with basic features, ease of use and the longest talk and stand-by times on the market.
  • The new version of the Nokia 2110 - the classic GSM handportable which in February received the award of the most outstanding phone of the year by GSM professionals.
  • The Nokia 6080, a sophisticated car phone with outmost connectivity and versatility for vehicle use.

"We believe that the new types of products will influence how people will communicate while mobile. Nokia offers durability and ease of use with the Nokia 1610, ultimate portability and design with the Nokia 8110 and the next dimension of mobile communication with the Nokia 9000. This all is a result of our segmentation analyses and outcome of innovative and focused product development work," concludes Ala-Pietilä.

The Nokia 1610 and the Nokia 6080 are available for most GSM networks immediately, and the Nokia 8110 and Nokia 9000 starting this summer.
