Nokia pioneers new product category with the world's first all-in-one communicator

The Nokia 9000 Communicator provides true ease-of-use for communicating and organizing, combined in a single portable product
Nokia today announced the introduction of an entirely new type of integrated digital communications tool. The revolutionary Nokia 9000 Communicator combines digital voice and data services and personal organizer functions into a single, small-sized and easy-to-use unit. This new communicator will be available in major GSM markets in Europe and Asia starting this summer.
The Nokia 9000 Communicator signals the birth of the real information age. The product is targeted for people who spend a lot of time on the move but need to have access to various digital communication applications and keep in touch in multiple ways.
The Nokia 9000 Communicator is a fully-featured GSM-phone with enhanced communication and organizing capabilities. In addition to voice calls, the communicator enables users to send and receive faxes, e-mail and short messages (online postcards) as well as access Internet services and corporate and public databases. The new product also provides users with organization functions such as electronic calendar, address book, notepad and calculator. All this is available in a single stylish unit, at the size and weight of a handportable phone.
Towards the pocketable office
"Digital cellular tecnology and the quality of networks have matured to a stage where Nokia sees a global opportunity for taking a giant leap towards the wireless pocketable office. In Europe alone, GSM networks cover more than 300 million people, millions of which have a need for a versatile, simple, convenient and extremely compact communications tool. This new communicator product is a result of Nokia’s technological leadership and innovation," states Pekka Ala-Pietilä, President of Nokia Mobile Phones.

PC’s revolutionalized data processing, while fax machines, copiers and email systems transformed office automation. In a similar way, the Nokia 9000 Communicator will start a new era of wireless digital communications," continues Ala-Pietilä.

All the applications in the Nokia 9000 Communicator - phone, fax, address book, e-mail, Internet - have the same innovative user interface. The applications work together and can be accessed with a push of a button. For example, to send a fax, the user just presses the fax application button, writes a note and selects a recipient from the address book. The user can readily confirm a phone call by fax or a follow up a fax by phone call. Reading and answering email and SMS is possible also when the phone is turned off, with sending and receiving taking place as soon as the phone is again turned on.
When the keyboard is closed, the communicator can be used as a GSM phone. When the device is opened for using the keyboard, the speakerphone activates, allowing the user to view documents from the large LCD screen while speaking.
The Nokia 9000 Communicator can be connected to a PC with a serial cable or with an infrared connection. This enables the user to backup and and restore information or download documents and addresses. The files can be printed through fax, sending the file to a PC for printing, or directly using the infrared link.
The communicator has been developed in collaboration with partners including Geoworks, providing the operating system platform for the product, and Intel, supplying the processor and flash memory used in the product.
The Nokia 9000 Communicator is designed to operate for an average workday. It provides 130 minutes of talk, fax or data time, or 30 hours of standby. If the phone is switched off, the communicator will stand by for a week without recharging. Data will not be lost even if the main battery runs out completely. Travel chargers and car kits are available, allowing for easy charging on the road.
