Nokia to supply microwave radios to the Swedish operator Telia
March 08, 1996

Nokia Telecommunications has recently signed a contract with Telia AB for delivery of microwave radios. The contract is worth about SEK 45 million. Deliveries began in February, and will take place over the next three years.

Nokia is to supply Telia with long-haul radio links, that is radios for longer transmission distances up to 70 km, including microwave radios for 2, 7 and 8 GHz frequency bands. Telia will use these radios in trunk network applications and cellular networks.

With this contract, Nokia becomes Telia´s sole supplier of long-haul radios. Nokia was chosen amongst tough competition comprising eight other radio suppliers. Telia chose Nokia based on the technical solution and past experience. Nokia has been delivering a wide range of transmission equipment to Telia since 1977.

Nokia has been manufacturing microwave radios since 1965. The current product range consists of low and medium-capacity point-to-point radios in 2 to 38 GHz frequency bands.

Telia AB is the biggest national telecommunications operator in Sweden. Telia AB provides both fixed services, including telephony, data and cable-TV, as well as cellular phone and other mobile services. Telia AB is heavily expanding into the international market via its ownership in Unisource.

Note to editors: The role of radio links in transmission networks is becoming more and more important. As deregulation of the telecommunications industry continues and new operators enter the demand for transmission links is increasing. New operators need rapid network deployment, and one of the fastest solutions is use of radio links.
