February 21, 1996
Belgacom Mobile in Belgium has announced the decision to award a three year frame contract for GSM base station subsystems to Nokia Telecommunications. The total orders will represent a value of over BEF 2.5 billion and will be shared between Nokia and a current supplier to Belgacom Mobile.
Nokia will deliver to Belgacom Mobile its latest generation of base stations and base station controllers as well as its Operations and Maintenance Center. Moreover, the contract will include implementation, technical support and training services.
This agreement is part of Belgacom Mobile's GSM network expansion and upgrade network coverage and capacity. Belgacom Mobile also plans to implement microcells at the most dense areas of mobile phone usage.
"We are honoured to be chosen as Belgacom Mobile's new base station system supplier, and do believe that this decision well demonstrates the competitiveness of Nokia's base station technology," said Pekka Vartiainen, Vice President, Nokia Telecommunications, Europe.
