February 19, 1996
HP and Nokia announce availability of first full-function personal communicator in select markets
Hewlett-Packard Company today announced availability of the HP OmniGo 700LX Communicator Plus, the first personal mobile business centre, in select countries in Europe and Asia.
Jointly developed with Nokia, the HP OmniGo 700LX Communicator Plus integrates the industry-leading HP 200LX palmtop PC with two-way cellular voice and data communications. With voice, fax, short messaging and e-mail, the HP OmniGo 700LX Communicator Plus enables business professionals to compute and communicate wherever they are*.

"With the integration of Nokia's gital cellular technology, the new HP OmniGo 700LX Communicator Plus represents the convergence of two industry leaders' strengths, enabling joint technology that defines a new category of handheld devices: the personal mobile business centre," said Kheng Joo Khaw, general manager of HP's Asia-Pacific Personal Computer Division (APCD). - It's a simple idea, but a tremendous breakthrough - integrated cellular and computing technology combined with personal management tools in a convenient and practical form.
"On average business professionals spend more than 20 per cent of their time away from their desk, and increasingly they have to spend periods of more than 24 hours out of the office," explained Reijo Paajanen, Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones. - Together with HP we're providing such people with a genuinely useful and compact tool for keeping them in touch via remote voice, fax and data communications.
Weighing less than 400 g and measuring just 9 cm x 18 cm, the HP OmniGo 700LX Communicator Plus provides a convenient alternative to a portable briefcase with a notebook computer, fax modem and mobile phone. The product design allows for ease of use with two devices, which can either be used separately or seamlessly integrated to give the access to a wide range of services. All sorts of professionals from field sales teams, field engineers and transportation managers to journalists and law enforcement personnel will be able to benefit from the powerful data management and communications features this new tool offers.
With the HP OmniGo 700LX Communicator Plus the user can:
* send and receive e-mail
* send and receive messages of up to 160 characters using Short Message Service (SMS)
* create, send, receive and forward faxes
* connect remotely to the users network to transfer files or browse the Internet
* schedule appointments and view a calendar
* store and access names, addresses and phone numbers
* set-up and access databases
* manage their finances with Pocket Quicken
* create and edit spreadsheets with Lotus 1-2-3
* use the HP financial calculator to solve financial problems
* run DOS-based applications from PCMCIA cards
* print to IRDA-compliant printers
The phone and palmtop use separate power sources, so talk time does not drain the battery of the computing unit which can also easily be connected to other computers and printers via infrared, serial or PCMCIA card interfaces.
Availability
The HP OmniGo 700LX Communicator Plus will be available in Europe in April. Introduction and availability in North America is dependent on development of GSM services in local markets.
