February 14, 1996
Cellnet, the UK mobile communications operator and Nokia Telecommunications, the infrastructure arm of Finland based Nokia Group have signed an agreement for the supply of new generation base station systems for Cellnet's digital GSM network. The agreement is valued in the order of GBP 100 million.
Cellnet's Technology Director, Mike Tiplady said; "Cellnet has a subscriber base of nearly 2.5 million in the UK, and we are committed to building our level of service. We have chosen to work with Nokia because we believe it offers us the best solution to meet the needs of our digital and data services customers. I have been very satisfied with the relationship built up with Nokia in recent years, and look forward to this continuing. The new base stations will allow us to boost capacity and further increase our network coverage and quality."
The agreement includes the supply of new generation base stations, base station controllers, Nokia's network management system, OMC and associated services. This new generation base station solution includes a number of advanced features which enable better network efficiency.
Nokia has also recently announced a more advanced base station, known as "Nokia PrimeSite", a compact and highly flexible solution for urban, indoor, rural, underground and rooftop configurations.
Peter Kuhne, the Managing Director for Nokia Telecommunications UK Ltd commented, "Nokia is delighted that Cellnet has chosen us as their digital base station supplier. We believe in working closely with our customers to maintain long term business links and develop solutions they need to retain an edge in the ever more competitive market."
Based in Slough, Berkshire UK, Cellnet is backed by BT. Its analogue TACS (Total Access Communications System) and digital GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) networks cover more than 98 percent of the UK.
