Nokia to Supply SDH Transmission System to Inner-Mongolia in China
January 24, 1996

Nokia Telecommunications has signed contract with the Inner-Mongolia Post and Telecommunications Administration (PTA) for the supply of SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) transmission system. This is Nokia's first SDH contract with the Inner-Mongolia PTA.

Nokia will deliver to the Inner-Mongolia PTA its SYNFONET STM-1 equipment, including Terminal Multiplexers Add & Drop Multiplexer nodes, and Nokia's Transmission Management System. The delivery consists of complete 300 km optical system. It is a STM-1 system, representing a capacity of 1,890 simultaneous phone calls. In this project Nokia introduced a new optical terminal for long distance connections. The longest distance getween two nodes in the system delivered is 129 km.

The main reason for choosing Nokia as their equipment supplier were, according to Mr Zhang Chun Sheng, Director of the Inner-Mongolia PTA, Nokia's capabilities for the 129 km hop, fast delivery time and Nokia's experience and quality in cables, switching and transmission products. The Inner-Mongolia PTA has previously purchased Nokia's DX 200 switching centres and optical cables.

SDH equipment improves the capacity and availability in the telecommunications network. It enables the operator to, e.g. supervise and allocate network resources for optimal performance at any time. SDH is also a platform for future telecommunications services.
