Nokia Establishes New Product Unit for Automotive Needs
January 17, 1996
Nokia will establish a new unit to develop and manufacture future products for the automotive industry. These products will cover solutions for navigation, security, telemetrics and other areas of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). Starting operations as of February 1, the new unit is part of Nokia Mobile Phones and will be based in Düsseldorf, Germany.
The automotive products unit will develop present competencies and existing products into new product solutions and services to meet emerging needs of the car industry, says Vice President Kalevi Kaartinen, head of the new unit.
"Car manufacturers are looking at possibilities to integrate navigation and road guidance systems, remote engine management, fleet control and other communication between vehicles and third parties into their products. The existing wide coverage cellular networks, especially digital, can be utilized in many of these solutions", says Kaartinen.
The initial products of the new unit will be based on specific applications and services like the short message service, combining the Nokia cellular data card with Nokia's cellular phones and other electronic equipment. These products are expected to be launched commercially already during 1996.
