Nokia and Telia Mobitel Extend GSM Cooperation
December 12, 1995
Telia Mobitel, the largest GSM operator in Sweden, has signed a two-year frame contract with Nokia for the delivery of GSM/DCS base station subsystems. The value of this agreement is estimated to SEK 200 million.
Nokia will deliver a new generation of GSM base stations, which facilitate network expansion for both dense traffic areas and indoor coverage. In addition, the contract covers Nokia DCS 1800 base stations. Nokia's solution offers Telia Mobitel the possibility to exploit both stand-alone DCS network and a seamless GSM/DCS dual-band network to secure the expected high demand of mobile services in the years to come.
Telia Mobitel's vision is that 90 % of Swedes will have a mobile/wireless phone by year 2000. This means new requirements on the network for high-capacity usage by the mass market. Today, Telia Mobitel's GSM network has 448.000 GSM customers. In addition, Telia Mobitel has 984.000 NMT450/900 customers.
