The Award of Nokia Foundation in 1995 to Mr Lauri Kuokkanen

The Award of Nokia Foundation in 1995 has been granted to Mr. Lauri Kuokkanen. The Award is the first of its kind, since Nokia Foundation has been founded in the course of this year.
In selecting the award winner, the Foundation took especially into account the long career of Mr Kuokkanen in the field of the mobile communications and his well demonstrated capability to start new business based on his technological inventions.
The most notable inventions of Mr Kuokkanen deal with the technology for so called duplex-filters which allow a simultaneous transmission and reception of the signal in telecommunication equipment like radio links or mobile phones. Starting from simple but ingenious ideas, Lauri Kuokkanen together with the development teams has been able to develop and manufacture superior performance products which have gained world class recognition.
Lauri Kuokkanen was born in 1931. He entered into the radio communications field in 1954. He was first employed by Salora radio factory in Salo and later by Helkama radio and TV factories in Hanko, Finland. 1962 he moved to Helsinki to work at the electronics department of the Finnish Cable Factory Oy that later became the Electronics Department of Nokia Corporation in the 1960's. Kuokkanen worked in the R&D department and later as the head of the radiotelephony department. In these positions, Kuokkanen's contribution had a significant role in the development of the first radio telephones, base stations and radio links manufactured in Finland.
Since 1973 Lauri Kuokkanen works in Oulu district in Northern Finland. He was first in charge of the radio telephony factory of Nokia in Oulu. Since 1976 he works as a private entrepreneur. During the last twenty years, he has been involved in setting up several enterprises that have grown to a notable size as subcontractors to Finnish and foreign electronics industry.
The contribution of Lauri Kuokkanen has been significant in setting up companies like Insele Oy, LK-Products Oy, Solitra Oy, Ultracom Oy and Ultraprint Oy. Thus, in addition to his technological achievements, the role of Lauri Kuokkanen has been significant in creating business and employment opportunities in the electronics industry in Finland and especially in Oulu region. The companies started by Lauri Kuokkanen employ today more than 1000 persons.
The size of the Award of Nokia Foundation is FIM 50.000 .
