Nokia Extends GLOBE TELECOM's Handyphone Network in the Philippines

Nokia Telecommunications has signed an order with GLOBE TELECOM for expansion of their GSM cellular telephone network. Nokia will deliver GSM equipment for GLOBE TELECOM's Phase Three expansion. The value of the order is close to USD 60 million.

Nokia will expand the system capacity of the existing mobile switching centre, deliver base stations and base station controllers as well as a Data Communications Server and microwave radio and fibre optic equipment. The expansion will be implemented during 1996.

Today, GLOBE TELECOM's GSM network serves the main cities of Manila and Cebu, and portions of Cavite, Laguna and Batangas provinces in Southern Luzon as well as the cities of Baguio in Northern Luzon and Davao in Mindanao. GLOBE TELECOM is currently implementing the second phase of its GSM Handyphone network which targets nationwide coverage.

Nokia Telecommunications has been delivering GSM infrastructure to GLOBE TELECOM since early 1994. Nokia Mobile Phones has been supplying mobile phones to the network since its opening in September, 1994.
