Nokia and Radiolinja of Finland Sign FIM 500 Million GSM Contract
December 22, 1995
Radiolinja, the privately owned Finnish GSM operator, and Nokia Telecommunications have signed an agreement for the supply of GSM equipment to Radiolinja's GSM network. The value of the agreement is close to FIM 500 million.
"During 1995 Radiolinja will take into operation a record figure of more than one thousand base station cells. At the same time Radiolinja has increased the network capacity due to the big demand for GSM services," points out Mr Pertti Malva, Managing Director of Radiolinja.
"This agreement is a continuation to the good cooperation Radiolinja and Nokia have experienced since Radiolinja was established in 1988", says Mr Juhani Koivula, Nokia Telecommunications' Area Manager, Finland. "It strengthens our status as the leading supplier in Finland's mobile cellular infrastructure market. It is very important for us to maintain our position in the advanced telecommunication markets in Finland and develop cooperation with domestic operators. Their high technical demands and dynamic way of operating have helped Nokia to create more competitive products and systems. These factors have also enhanced our international success."
Radiolinja was established in 1988 and was awarded its GSM license in October, 1990. Radiolinja, part of the Finnet Group, was the first GSM operator to open its network in July, 1991. The world's first genuine GSM call was made in March, 1991, using Radiolinja's network.
