November 16, 1995
Nokia Mobile Phones announced today the official opening of its Southeast Asian customer support and distribution centre in Singapore and the award of the Business Headquarters status by the Economic Development Board of Singapore.
As the nerve centre for Nokia's growing business activities in South and Southeast Asia, the regional customer support and distribution centre in Singapore will provide greater flow of information and improved distribution and support services for Nokia's business partners in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Indochina, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
As recognition of its increased resources for supporting customers and affiliates in Singapore, Nokia received the prestigious Business Headquarters status from the Economic Development Board. This award is presented to a select group of established companies providing business and professional expertise and key support services to the region.
Nokia started in Singapore and Asia in 1981. Nokia Mobile Phones now employs over 1 400 people in Asia and has established operations in 12 countries, including Japan, China, India, Hong Kong, and Australia.
The Asia-Pacific cellular phone market is one of the fastest-growing in the world today. According to market estimates, more than a quarter of the world's mobile phone users will come from the Asia-Pacific area by 1999. "This region offers us great opportunities", said Mr. Jouko Häyrynen, Senior Vice President for Asia-Pacific and the Gulf at Nokia Mobile Phones. "We see huge demand potential for our products - also in new developing markets like China and India. This new unit enhances our ability to quickly respond to the needs of our customers and partners in Asia and shows our long-term commitment to this area."
