Nokia, SONOFON Announce Major Expansion of Danish GSM Network
October 03, 1995
Danish GSM operator SONOFON has entered into a three-year frame agreement with Nokia for the expansion of their GSM network. The deal calls for the delivery of Nokia DX 200 exchanges, base stations, base station controllers, transmission equipment as well as system capability for Intelligent Network (IN) services to SONOFON's GSM network.
The value of the agreement is approximately USD 90 million. Deliveries will commence at the end of 1995.
"Nokia and SONOFON have enjoyed a good relationship since our first agreement in 1991", noted Mr. Tage Rasmussen, Technical Director of SONOFON. "Nokia's technology and service through these years has been very satisfactory. We are confident that our continued relationship will help to maintain our competitiveness as well as ensure that our customers receive the best possible service."
In addition, the agreement includes a provison for the supply of equipment for the DCS 1800 cellular standard, allowing SONOFON to further expand their cellular capacity if allocated the necessary frequencies.
"When the time is right and the frequency situation resolved, SONOFON will be able to complement its GSM network with DCS 1800 in easy and financially sound way as capacity requirements warrant," said Mr. René Svendsen-Tune, Managing Director, Nokia Telecommunications A/S.
Today, SONOFON's network offers full geographical coverage of Denmark. According to Mr. Rasmussen, these new investments will increase in-building coverage and ensure smooth capacity expansion to match growth in demand. Additionally, the introduction of IN will give SONOFON the ability to offer new services more rapidly in response to emerging customer demands.
Nokia is a world leader in digital GSM/DCS cellular networks, and to date Nokia GSM/DCS infrastructure has been supplied to or ordered by 34 operators in 24 countries.
