Nokia Establishes New R&D Center in Japan
October 09, 1995
Nokia Mobile Phones will expand its cellular operations in Japan by establishing a research and development center in Tokyo. By setting up this unit, Nokia aims to further improve customer support and knowledge of the specific needs and requirements of its Japanese customers.
"Expanding our R & D network to Japan shows our long-term commitment to the Japanese market", says Mr. Pekka Ala-Pietilä, President of Nokia Mobile Phones. "Besides forging a close link with our Japanese customers, we will also have the opportunity to be adjacent to many leading technologies and companies. By cooperating with the quality-conscious Japanese customers and partners, Nokia aims to enhance its competitiveness in Japan", states Ala-Pietilä.
"The Japanese market provides us with a benchmark in technology. Furthermore, development of sophisticated portable electronics for communications, information technology and multimedia applications continues rapidly in Japan. With our local R & D, we feel that we can participate in that development", says Mr. Yrjö Neuvo, Senior Vice President for R & D at Nokia Mobile Phones.
Nokia's new R& D center is located in Akasaka Mitsuke, and operations are being started during the autumn. The new Japanese unit is part of Nokia's global R & D network, which comprises seven other R & D centers, located in Finland, Great Britain, Germany, Denmark, the United States and Australia.
In partnership with Mitsui, Nokia started selling digital cellular phones in Japan in April 1994. Nokia is the only European company supplying cellular phones to Japan, and has achieved a 15 % market share in the fast growing Japanese digital cellular market.
