Nokia Welcomes Single Standard for Next Generation High Density Optical Disc Format
September 26, 1995
The announcement by Philips Electronics N.V. and Sony Corporation that their proposal of a single, next generation high-density optical disc format that combines the best features of the MMCD and SD formats had been accepted by members of the SD alliance was welcomed by Nokia.
"We welcome and support the single format proposal," says Dr. Helmut Stein, Vice President, Technology and New Business for Nokia Consumer Electronics. "It will be best for both the consumer electronics and PC industry and the especially the consumers. With the single standard, the market introduction of the new format will be much easier and faster than with two rivaling systems."
The basic specifications for the single format agreed upon on September 15 were as follows:
- backwards compatibility with current CD audio and CD-ROM disks;
- 0.6 mm substrate thickness, bonded disc (single layer/dual layer)
- 4.7 gigabytes capacity per layer
- EFM Plus signal modulation
- RS-PC error correction code
The MMCD format was originally proposed by Philips and Sony and endorsed by Nokia. The SD Alliance included Toshiba, Matsushita and Thomson, among others.
