GO Communications selects Nokia for PCS base stations
June 01, 1995
GO Communications will acquire approx. USD 200 million in PCS base station systems from Nokia Telecommunications in the first three years of a definitive 10-year supply agreement.
GO Communications will bid on 30 MHz PCS licenses at the auction established by the FCC for entrepreneurial plans to form a nationwide alliance of winners of the A, B and C block auctions that have selected PCS1900 technology in order to provide seamless service to customers throughout the US. Delivery under the supply agreement is contingent upon GO winning the required licenses.
Steven A. Zecola, President and CEO of GO Communications, said: "We are delighted to add Nokia to our team. Nokia brings worldwide leadership in PCS, providing infrastructure to five PCS systems aroung the world."
Jyrki Salo, President of Nokia Telecommunications Inc., added: "We are well positioned for the rapid deployment of PCS in North America and look forward to supporting GO's aggressive build-out requirements. The agreement with GO will help us to quickly achieve economies of scale in the United Sates for base station production."
Nokia will supply GO with its base stations, which allow roof-top base station installations in suburban areas. This deployment will accommodate both GO's rapid build-out schedule and GO's plan to provide local, long distance and mobility services to customers, thereby enabling replacement of the customers existing telephone providers.
