June 19, 1995
Nokia Mobile Phones' new cellular phone factory at Merikaari in Salo was officially opened on Monday, 19 June 1995.
The new factory was inaugurated by Finnish Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen.
The technology and production solutions of the new Salo factory are top noted globally. The total factory area is over 15,000 square meters, and there are 1,200 people working in the factory. The factory was completed last year, and production was initialized in phases throughout this spring. It took only 10 months to build the factory even though many innovative structural and technical solutions were introduced.
Nokia began manufacturing mobile phones in Salo in 1981. Since then, the products, production technologies and output volume have changed radically.
"The foundation for the strong growth has been the centralizing of production and investments into new technology and automation. This has enabled us to boost production, increase jobs and subcontracting," commented Nokia Mobile Phones' President Pekka Ala-Pietilä at the opening ceremony for the factory.
During the past two years, Nokia Mobile Phones has increased its work force in Salo by about 1,800 people, i.e. more than double. the number of subcontracting projects for production and services has increased strongly. The Nokia Mobile Phones' Salo operations directly or indirectly employ nearly 8,000 people in Finland.
Mobile phones are currently exported from Salo to more than 70 countries. In addition to Salo, Nokia Mobile Phones manufactures mobile phones in Germany, the United States, South Korea and Hong Kong. The company is Europe's largest and the world's second-largest manufacturer of mobile phones.
