Nokia supplies GSM network to Calcutta in India

Nokia Telecommunications and Modi Telstra Pvt. Ltd. have signed an agreement for the supply of a GSM digital cellular network to Calcutta in India.

Nokia will supply to Calcutta a complete GSM network, including DX 200 mobile switching centre, base stations, base stations controllers and necessary transmission equipment.

- This contract places us in a stronger position to launch our service early i the second half of this year, said Mr Luci Luchiani, CEO of Modi Telstra. He further added that Modi Telstra was impressed with the quality of the Nokia system and this coupled with Telstra's expertise in cellular mobile communications, would enable Modi Telstra to provide a world class service to the people of Calcutta.

The contract with Modi Telstra is the second GSM contract for Nokia in India during this year. - The Modi Telstra contract demonstrates that Nokia's proven track record and position as one of the world's leading suppliers of GSM systems is recognized also in India. This contract strengthens Nokia's position in the Indian telecommunications market, states Mr. Kari Ahola, Vice President of Nokia Telecommunications.

Modi Telstra is owned by Modi Rubber, part of Modi Group of Companies and Telstra from Australia.
