Nokia Group signs agreement with China's PTIC
April 11, 1995
Finland's Nokia Group has further strengthened its position in China by concluding a wide-range cooperation agreement with the Chinese Post and Telecommunications Industrial Corporations (PTIC).
The agreement, announced during the visit to China this week of Nokia Group President and CEO Jorma Ollila, covers a 50/50 joint venture for the manufacture of digital cellular telecommunications products and technology transfer, as well as distribution, marketing and service of mobile telephones and network products.
Under the agreement, a new company - Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecommunications Limited - will deliver complete GSM digital mobile phone networks, including switching, base stations and phones. The factory will be established at the premises of the Chinese partner, close to Beijing.
"The rapid growth and internationalisation of China's telecommunications sector which we have witnessed during the past few years will continue", Mr Ollila said. "Nokia's success is based increasingly on the joint efforts with our partners to serve new market areas, as well as on our ability to develop innovative products suited to our customers' needs."
"Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecommunications is our newest joint venture in China, another sign of Nokia's expansion plans in China and Asia. Cooperation with the PTIC as a strong local partner ensures reliable and long term contacts with Chines operators and other customers."
Nokia established itself in China's telecommunications market in the early 1980s and delivered its first wireless networks to China more than 10 years ago. Nokia's other joint ventures in China cover transmission and switching equipment, and optical cables.
In October 1994 the first official GSM call in China was made in Beijing by Post and Telecommunications Minister Wu Jichuan, using a phone and a network both delivered by Nokia. Nokia is supplying GSM network infrastructure and mobile phones to Beijing, under a contract signed with the Beijing Telecommunications Administration in May 1994.
