Nokia supplies GSM network to Fujian province in China
April 28, 1995
Nokia Telecommunications and Fujian Posts and Telecommunications Administration have signed a contract for supply of a GSM network to Fujian province in China.
Deliveries will commence in the near future and the network will be taken into operation during 1995. The value of the contract is more than USD 20 million. Nokia will deliver to Fujian the complete GSM network infrastructure. According to the agreement Nokia will supply DX 200 switching centres, base stations and base station controllers as well as Operation and Maintenance Centre. The system will offer versatile services for the users, e.g. data and fax calls. In addition, Nokia will supply a short message service, voice mail and networking planning systems. The network will also include some 18 GHz microwave radio relays.
The Fujian Posts and Telecommunications Administration's GSM network will be implemented during 1995. The network will cover most of the Fujian province, including the three major cities; Fuzhou (provincial capital city), Quanzhou and Xiamen.
GSM has already itself as the digital cellular standard also in China. This contract further strengthens the position of both GSM standard and Nokia in China. Previously Nokia has supplied a GSM network to Beijing Telecommunications Administration in 1994 and has expanded the network in 1995. The first GSM call in China was made by Minister Wu Jichuan in October 1994.
