Nokia, Ericsson and HP release a Command Interface Specification for GSM Data Cards and Adapters
February 07, 1995
Nokia, Ericsson and Hewlett Packard have today supplemented ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) specifications by releasing AT Command Specification for GSM data cards and adapters.
This specification follows the standards used between personal computers and modems and facilitates wireless data communication in GSM networks.
The GSM system for mobile communications offers advanced wireless data, fax and short message services standardised by ETSI. This new specification defines a command interface between personal computers GSM data cards and for mobile telephones adapters. The commands are intended for operation over serial, PCMCIA and infrared interface.
The specification follows the style of the industry standard AT command set used between personal computers and modems. The specification includes AT commands to select voice, data or fax modes, control supplementary services, control handset functionality and send and receive short messages. This control facilitates development of personal data communications solutions, where service selection is automated by business applications on computers.
The specification also includes the latest extension to AT command set: voice commands and data adapter identification through v.25ter and computer industry "plug and play" mechanism. For cellular extensions the specification uses AT+C commands in the same way as defined in USA TIA standards for TDMA and CDMA cellular systems.
" We at Nokia believe that this specification, which follows the latest trends in computer and communications industry, is very important for our customers and partners. The new interface gives software houses the possibility to build applications which exploit the full set of GSM features. This command interface also gives the opportunity to build additional full function interfaces like Microsoft Intel TAPI and Novell TSAPI over GSM services", says Reijo Paajanen, Vice Precident for Cellular Data in Nokia Mobile Phones.
"The enhanced AT command specifications will be an important part of the complete architecture for future evolutions of mobile communication. Software can be created to provide multimedia communication solutions for people on the move and to enable the development of additional new end-user applications and services", says Dr. Michael Farese, Vice President for Ericsson Global Product Management, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.
