Nokia extends GSM network in Beijing
February 25, 1995
Nokia Telecommunications and the Beijing Telecommunications Administration (BTA) have signed a contract for the expansion of the GSM network in Beijing.
The expansion will increase the capacity of the Beijing network ten-fold to approximately 100 000 subscribers. For the expansion project will expand the existing mobile switching centre and deliver additional base station controllers and base stations and enhace the services to include data and fax. Together with already existing voice mail and short messages, the network is the only system in China providing all these services.
According the BTA Nokia's performance during the first phase of the network project together with the feature-rich services set of Nokia GSM system were the main argument for choosing Nokia also in the second phase.
Nokia announced the order for the first phase of the Beijing GSM network in May 1994 and the first GSM call was made by Minister Wu Jichuan in October 1994.
