Nokia Cables receives orders from China worth FIM 65 million
January 10, 1995
Nokia Cables Ltd will supply China with a total of FIM 65 million worth of optical fibre cables and installation materials. The contracts also include a substantial training package.
The optical fibre cables will be delivered to the Guangxi, Gansu and Inner Mongolia provinces. Coinciding with the cable delivery, Nokia Telecommunications will be supplying the Guangxi province with transmis-sion system equipment.
The People's Republic of China is currently investing in building up the nation's telecommunications infrastructure. The contracts will streng-then the long-distance net-work in the provinces. The 8,000 kilometers of optical fibre cables to be delivered include aerial, underground and submarine cables.
The Guangxi province in southern China has recently made rapid progress, in part because of its good relations with its neighbors. The contract now signed is Nokia Cables' third optical fibre cable deal to the province. The deliveries to Guangxi mainly consist of aerial cables.
Inner Mongolia and Gansu are China's northern provinces, where develop-ment of the telecommunications infrastructure has just begun. Inner Mongolia will receive 3,000 kilometers of aerial cables and 1,000 kilometers of underground cables, part of which are Special Direct Burial cables, which have a special structure for tensile strength.
Because of Inner Mongolia's arctic climate, some of the aerial cables being delivered are designed specifically for use in very cold environments. The 4,000 kilometers of optical fibre cables going to Inner Mongolia is the same amount of optical fibre connections built so far throughout the entire province. Nokia Cables first supplied optical fibre cables to Inner Mongolia in 1993.
Trade with the Gansu province is a breakthrough for Nokia Cables, and it is also the first optical fibre deal for the province. Gansu will receive mainly aerial cables and, to some extent, Special Direct Burial cables as well as River Crossing submarine cables.
Nokia's persistent efforts in China have earned it a valued position as a competitive supplier in the telecommunications business. The contracts now signed mean further expansion of market areas and trade relations in China.
To date, Nokia has delivered more than 10,000 kilometers of optical fibre cables to China. In the future, China's deliveries will also be manufactured in Shanghai at Nokia Cables' joint venture, Shanghai Nokia Optical Cables Ltd (SNOC). Established last summer, SNOC's construction and machine installations have progressed as scheduled and the trial run of the factory will commence in January.
