Nokia Mobile Phones celebrates 10 years of success in Malaysia
January 25, 1995

Nokia Mobile Phones, Europe's largest and the world's second largest mobile phone manufacturer, is today celebrating its 10th year anniversary of partnership with O'Connors Engineering and Trading in Malaysia.

With O'Connors as their distributor, Nokia started cellular phone sales in Malaysia in January, 1985. Malaysia was the first country of distribution for Nokia in the Asia-Pacific region, and today is its second biggest mobile phone market in Southeast Asia after Thailand.

"As our very first distributor in Southeast Asia, O'Connors has done an outstanding job in creating effective distribution channels for our products in Malaysia", said Mr. Jorma Ollila, Chief Executive Officer of Nokia. "With the success of our analogue range of phones, we are now set to begin the active marketing of our full range of digital handportables to the corresponding network systems in Malaysia, which include TDMA, GSM and PCN networks starting this year", added Mr. Ollila.

To commemorate this 10th year anniversary, Mr. Ollila presented a gold plated Nokia 2110 phone to O'Connors at the press conference held today.

Malaysia was the first country in Southeast Asia to have a cellular network. Through O'Connors, Nokia launched the ATUR 450 model in 1985, which was the world's first introduction of this product. In 1994, O'Connors and Nokia launched Malaysia's first digital cellular phone, the Nokia 2120. With the introduction and development of the new digital network systems, Nokia will be launching its entire range of digital products in Malaysia within the year.

According to Mr. Lee Geok Tian, Managing Director, O'Connors Engineering and Trading (Malaysia) Bhd, "O'Connors is one of the single largest suppliers of handphones in Malaysia. The success we have experienced as sole distributor of Nokia handportables in this country, is due to the exceptional products which the company manufactures. As Nokia is the world leader in digital mobile phones, they will undoubtedly take our company to new heights as we head into the next century. We are certainly looking forward to many more years of successful partnership with Nokia Mobile Phones in Malaysia".

Along with the marketing of handphones, Nokia is also very active in the delivery and development of telecommunications infrastructure in Malaysia. Recently, Nokia Telecommunications signed an agreement with Electronics and Telematiques (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (ETM) to supply the terminals for the new PCN network which is launching in Malaysia shortly.

Mr. Juha Pinomaa, Managing Director, Nokia Mobile Phones (SEA) Pte Ltd adds, "Nokia Mobile Phones will launch the full range of digital products in conjunction with the new digital network systems which are being implemented in Malaysia. With the upcoming launch of the PCN network here, Malaysia will be the first country in Southeast Asia in which Nokia has introduced its entire range of digital products for three network systems".
