Nokia supplies full turnkey GSM 1800 network expansion to New World PCS, Hong Kong
In addition to mobile IN and NetGate products, Nokia will supply a range of equipment to New World PCS, including mobile switching centres, base station controllers, a range of base transceiver stations, as well as an upgrade to the NMS/2000 network management system. Nokia will also provide full project management services, network integration, training, technical support and complementary services such as cabling and power supplies.
"As one of our strategic partners, Nokia provides good quality, state-of-the-art products," says Mr Peter Tsang, Chief Executive of New World PCS Ltd. "This has already been proven with the existing Nokia GSM 1800 network. With this expansion, we have been looking for solutions that increase capacity and better quality as well as provide innovative solutions for our customers. We have found this with Nokia."
"Nokia has proven its capability in the rapid deployment of PCS networks in Hong Kong," adds Mr Jouko Päivinen, Managing Director, Nokia Telecommunications (Hong Kong) Limited. "This contract marks the continuation of our deliveries of cost-effective advanced GSM solutions to the Hong Kong market."
Nokia supplied New World with a complete Personal Communication Network (PCN) system based on GSM 1800 (Digital Cellular System 1800) technology in October 1996. The contract included a mobile switching centre, base stations, base station controllers and a comprehensive network management system.
New World PCS (NWPCS) is part of the New World Development Co. Ltd of Hong Kong, and is working with New World Telephone Ltd and New World Paging Ltd to provide a full range of telecommunications services, including fixed-line, mobile, and paging services, plus multimedia payphones.
Nokia offers total GSM systems, with everything from mobile phones to transmission and switching equipment. Having supplied GSM technology to 65 operators in 34 countries, Nokia ranks as the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest vendors of GSM 900.
