Nokia Telecommunications, Telkom Research and Information Technology (Risti) Division Establish Radio Access Network Laboratory

In the cooperation, Nokia supports the wireless internet application development and provides the information technologies, such as GSM1800, GSM 900/1800 dual-band, and GSM1800/fixed wireless trial system for the joint use of DIVRisTI and Nokia. The agreement also includes Nokia’s support in providing education and training for PT Telkom’s engineers as well as for universities in Indonesia.

Through the access network Laboratory, Nokia and Telkom Research and Information Technology will study together new services and technologies under the infrastructure provided. In addition, the two parties will evaluate the service and quality of the Nokia’s hardware and software, by providing full test network (GSM1800) which will include network subsystem, base stations, software and handset.

“Nokia continues its commitment to support the transfer of information technology process in Indonesia. Radio Access Network Laboratory is expected to be a reference for level research, especially in information technology sector,” said Nils Kämpe, President Director of Nokia Telecommunications. “Nokia wishes to give its support through its contributions in the development of telecommunication industry in Indonesia,” he added.

In his speech, the President Director of PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia, Mr. A. A. Nasution said, “This Radio Access Network Laboratory has a strategic meaning and significant role of Telkom in positioning the company in the future business. We have started a long term co-operation with Nokia Telecommunications which has supported DIVRisTI in the establishment of this laboratory.”

Nokia is the world’s largest supplier of GSM1800 networks, one of the two largest suppliers of GSM900 as well as being a market leader in wireless data infrastructure. Nokia’s GSM technology has been supplied to or ordered by 65 operators in 34 countries.

Recently, Nokia Telecommunications and its distributor in Indonesia, PT Abhimata Citra Abadi have signed an expansion of Telkomsel’s GSM network agreement. Based on agreement, Nokia is to deliver base station controllers, GSM base stations and microcells for Telkomsel, in addition to Nokia’s Intelligent Underlay-Overlay solutions, the Nokia NMS/2000 network management system, network planning services and technical support for a period of three years.
