Connect Austria Chooses Nokia for the GSM 1800 Network in Austria

Nokia will be the sole supplier to Connect Austria and will supply a full turnkey GSM 1800 network. This will include high capacity Nokia mobile switching centres, base station network and the Nokia Network Management system NMS/2000. In addition, Nokia will supply a transmission access network and a full IN solution platform. Customer services including training, network planning, installation and commissioning are also included.

"This decision is a key milestone and a honour for Nokia, primarily for starting such an important partnership with Connect Austria. With the Nokia IN solution in the network, Connect Austria can also be assured that high value added services will be available in their network from day one", says Mr. Mikko Heikkonen, President, Nokia Network Systems.

Connect Austria GmbH is owned by Radex Heraklith International of Austria, Constantia Privatbank of Austria, Viag Interkom of Germany, Telenor of Norway, TeleDanmark of Denmark, and Orange of Great Britain. Connect Austria won the GSM 1800 license in August 1997 and aims to have a coverage of 95% of the population of Austria by 2001.

Nokia offers total GSM systems, with everything from digital mobile phones to transmission and switching. Having supplied GSM technology to 61 operators in 33 countries, Nokia ranks as the world's number one supplier of GSM 1800 networks.
