Nokia Provides Major GSM Network Expansion to Cellnet in the UK

Nokia will supply state-of -the-art base station controllers and Nokia’s modular digital base stations, enabling Cellnet to increase network coverage and capacity. Nokia will also be providing expansions to the existing advanced network management system.

“Cellnet is committed to an ongoing programme of service improvement and I am very satisfied with the relationship we have built up with Nokia in recent years” explained Mike Tiplady, Technology Director of Cellnet. “Intensive engineering work has recently taken place in London with the installation of over 70 new cell-sites, a new multi-layer system from Nokia and a micro-cellular network in the city centre. The results of this programme are so good that we are carrying out similar work for other major UK cities.”

Cellnet will utilise Nokia’s market leading radio technology to provide the highest quality network to their customers. “At Nokia we believe in sharing our future visions with our customers. Having the industry’s most advanced road map for network and service developments has been instrumental in developing our relationship with Cellnet and winning this deal” explained Peter Kuhne, Managing Director for Nokia in the UK.

Cellnet has over 2.7 million customers in the UK of which over 1.4 million are connected to its digital service. It has already invested £1 billion in building its UK network; a network that has 2000 radio sites and typically handles around 10 million calls every day. By the end of 1998, Cellnet will have 3000 radio sites, having invested a further £1 billion in new technology for deeper coverage and extra services.

Nokia is the worlds largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks, one of the two largest suppliers of GSM 900 and a leader in digital mobile phones. In mobile data infrastructure, Nokia is a market leader and pioneer. In addition, it is a significant supplier of advanced transmission and switching solutions. Nokia also provides its customers with comprehensive support in building, operating and developing both cellular and fixed networks.

Cellnet is the UK mobile phone network backed by BT - its majority shareholder with a 60% stake. It was formed by BT and Securicor Group PLC and granted a licence to become a mobile communications network operator in 1985. Today, over 2.7 million customers are connected to Cellnet including well over 1 million connected to its digital service which conforms to the international standard known as GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) and offers customers the opportunity to use their mobile phone when travelling overseas.
