Nokia to Participate in Japanese 3rd Generation Digital Cellular Development
Nokia, the worlds largest digital cellular terminal manufacturer and one of the two global leaders in GSM/DCS digital cellular infrastructure, was the first non Japanese company to develop a digital mobile phone for the Japanese PDC (Personal Digital Cellular System) standard. Nokia today manufactures mobile phones for all major cellular standards.
Commenting on the announcement, Nokia Group Executive Board Member Professor Yrjö Neuvo stated, We are pleased to have been among those selected to cooperate with NTT DoCoMo in third-generation cellular activities for the Japanese market. Nokia is committed to exploring a broad range of technologies appropriate for third-generation mobile systems and is actively participating in standardization activities in several international fora. The announcement by NTT DoCoMo of the inclusion of Nokia among the initial group of vendors to develop prototype mobile terminals for their wide-band CDMA test network is a good example of these activities.
NTT DoCoMo Group is Japans largest mobile network operator with over 10 million subscribers nationwide. The group employs over 7,000 personnel and had sales in the fiscal year 1996 of ¥ 2 trillion.
